Connections: Sweden, America, Philippines

Sunday, May 19, 2019 – 3 p.m., Old Swedes Historic Site

Join the Old Swedes Foundation, People to People Delaware Chapter, and the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation for a talk by author John Eric Lundin. His book “Across the Brooklyn Bridge” explores his grandfather’s life from his youth in Sweden, to Egypt, England, Philadelphia, and finally Brooklyn in a Swedish-Filipino love story.

Based on family diaries dating from 1941-1947 in Brooklyn and the Pacific during WWII, the program appeals to broad interests and backgrounds. The author’s Swedish and Filipino familial roots and the emotional reuniting of Lundin’s parents after WWII bring forth a personal and heartwarming narrative.

Tours of the Kalmar Nyckel’s Copeland Maritime Center will be available from 2-2:45 p.m., with the talk taking place at 3:00 p.m. at Old Swedes Church.

Tours of the Copeland Maritime Center will cost $5 per person at the door. Admission for the talk at Old Swedes Church is free.

Ghosts in the Graveyard

Join us at Old Swedes Historic Site for an evening tour of the 1638 Burial Ground and hear the stories of famous—and infamous—people buried here. During the 19th century, stories about graveyard haunting were whispered in the parlors, taverns, and shops of Wilmington with hushed excitement. Some of these tales have never been refuted. Wander the paths through the burial grounds and see if you can solve the mystery of the late night bell ringing in the churchyard. Meet some of the inhabitants who call these grounds their home. The 1638 Burial Ground is the final resting place of more than 8,000 souls and contains 1,200 gravestones of all shapes and sizes. The church is one of the oldest in the United States still in use as a house of worship.
